Former Millionaire Blogger Suggests Occupy Wall Street Is Noise

I was recently disappointed when I saw a former millionaire Erica Douglass who makes a living as entrepreneur and blogger suggest in a blog post that the Occupy Wall Street protests are essentially a bunch of negative noise that is doing nothing good to cause change.

In her blog post she shows her lack of belief that the Occupy Wall Street protests are causing any change:

I’m here to tell you: Not only does this stuff not matter, but it’s a distraction preventing you from changing the world.

In the rush to label ourselves and prove that we are “different” (or the same as!) others, we’ve forgotten one thing: We all stand here together. And if there are problems with this world–our society–then it’s up to us to go out and fix them.

Oh yes, there were things the government did wrong. And big corporations. I’m not saying to ignore it–I’m saying stop getting caught up in it.

What would happen if, instead of engaging in a debate where no one’s mind gets changed and enemy lines get drawn between your friends and you, you simply opted out?

What if, instead of watching TV and getting furious about those damn liberals or those hopeless conservatives, you spent an hour working on your business?

I for one ardently disagree with her statements because in all honesty I think the Occupy Wall Street protests are creating change every single day that they exist. I believe the protests have brought a large group of people together from different walks of life and different backgrounds who all agree on one thing and that is that the status quo is not working for the majority of Americans and further I believe the protests have brought more and more Americans out who otherwise have remained silent on wrongdoings by corporations and government for decades. Speaking out and demonstrating peacefully is definitely a change and the Occupy Wall Street protests have accomplished to tell the government that they will not be censored and that the people will address this issue in very public forum until some change comes.

This week alone you will hear that the CEO of Citigroup said that he understands the Occupy Wall Street protests and that the finance industry needs to earn the American People’s trust back.

Surely a businesswoman like Erica must understand that there is much power in social media and grassroots and if we take a look at the way big business has used social media and marketing for years to shape how we live our lives then obviously these same tools can be used to reserve some of the grievances Americans have. Notably Erica seems to be a fan of Ron Paul but clearly she is not aware that many Ron Paul supporters have been involved in the Occupy Wall Street protests throughout the country.

I still respect and think she is an excellent blogger, accomplished businesswoman and speaker but honestly for someone who travels to Burning Man and talks about love for Ron Paul it would seem to me that she either lacks a good understanding of the change that is occurring and the unity of a great variety of people who has resulted from this movement.
